Mt Canobolas Collection

With time and experience Printhie has been able to identify the varieties that excel in the Orange region.

We have sourced fruit from individual vineyards where there is a perfect match of site and variety. The wines are very personal expressions of vineyard and variety.

This is Printhie's reserve range. Regionally distinctive fruit flavours are complemented by extra degrees of complexity introduced during the making of the wine. This produces wines that are outstanding due not only to their aromas and flavours but their textures and structures. These wines are produced in limited volumes.

Notes

We are very pleased with the palate acid-sugar balance achieved in this wine. The residual sugar gives aromatic lift, fullness and richness on the palate and the acid cleans up the structure so there is no hint of cloying sweetness. It’s a classic example of the fine line of acid and richness producing a scintillating balance on the palate. Excellent aromatic intensity with typical riesling fragrance. Pure fruit definition on the palate with terrific intensity and richness.

Comment

This wine strikes for the balance between sugar and acid with aplomb, and reveals candied orange, spices and ginger, with a generous texture; long and almost luscious, with a little grip to conclude. An excellent wine for spicy Asian foods.

Notes

The wine remains identifiably sauvignon blanc. The intensity of the fruit is toned down a little but this allows other, more subtle characters to come through. It is not about impact, it is about texture, richness and complexity. The character of the wine creeps up on you, so don’t drink it in too much of a hurry.

The full green-straw colour in part reflects full barrel fermentation in 2- and 6- year-old oak, with wild yeast and cloudy juice battonage and possibly some mlf. This is certainly way out in left field, with a funky bouquet, but an unexpectedly juicy/fruity palate. Won’t appeal to all, but it works for me.

Notes

This is a single vineyard wine from the Balmoral H Block planted more than 20 years ago. Hand picked, minimal handling, no acid, fining or enzymes. High solids juice, 100% wild ferment, 100% barrel ferment, 30% new French oak, lees stirring, no sulphur during barrel maturation (10 months). Due to the cool season and resulting high acid a greater proportion of the blend underwent malolactic fermentation to obtain better palate balance. Characterful, modern, complex chardonnay.

Cellar for 6 years | 12.2% Alc. | 7.2 Std Drinks

Comment

A single vineyard wine, barrel-fermented with wild yeast, and taken through mlf to reduce acidity. Sophisticated winemaking as produced a very elegant and well-balanced wine, with all the length one would wish for.

Notes

A cool vintage that shows some suprisingly ripe fruit. However, the palate is not entirely fruit dominated. Immediately shows typical pinot noir character with lifted cherries and raspberries. Whole bunches have added a spice note and there is some background earthiness or mushroom flavours. Tannins are soft and integrated.

Cellar for 4 years | 14.0% Alc. | 8.3 Std Drinks

Comment

Small batch fermentation, wild ferment, natural MLF, small percentage of whole bunches, hand-plunged, old oak maturation and lees stirring in barrel.

Notes

This is a very aromatic, medium-bodied wine with lifted black pepper spice and generous red berry fruit flavours. There is complexity from elegant fine-grained French oak that lingers in the background. The palate shows some good complexity with charcuterie, a hint of chocolate and cedar. The fine acid-tannin balance keeps the wine bright, fresh and textural.

Cellar for 10 years | 13.5% Alc. | 8.0 Std Drinks

Comment

There is a fineness and elegance to this wine that is almost the antithesis of Australian Shiraz. It is very reflective of the Orange region.
